First, figure out which colours you want to use in your dish. Polymer clays come in almost every colour, and some even have glitter in them! For the best marbling effect, make sure that you also add in a bit of black and white to each design. To start, use a small pinch of clay, about 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch in size.

Next, roll each piece of clay into a long “snake” of equal length and size.

If they’re not exactly the same size don’t worry, it will all turn out OK in the end.

Group each strand of clay together. Next, fold over and begin to twist the cluster.

Twist and twist until the cluster is wound up on itself like a screw.

Once it’s fully twisted, roll the cluster out into a smooth tube (above). Repeat the twisting step, then roll out again and repeat. This is how the marble design is created. You should do this step about three times, but not too many as it will make the design too small and all the colours will begin to combine and turn brown or grey. If you don’t twist it enough, the colours won’t create the marble look.

Once you’ve twisted and rolled out the clay about three times, the lump of clay should be very striped and messy. At this point, roll it into a ball and press it down so that you can roll it flat.

Use a rolling pin to roll the clay flat. If you don’t have a rolling pin, you can also use a smooth bottle.

This flat piece will become the dish base, or Mickey’s head. Repeat the whole process again with slightly smaller amounts of clay to become Mickey’s ears.

Place the rolled out clay circles into an oven-safe ceramic bowl and press into place. You can opt to make the edge perfect and clean, or more messy and misshapen, depending on your personal taste. We chose irregular edges to compliment the swirly design.

Bake at 180°C/160°F for 25 minutes. Carefully remove from the oven and allow to cool. To bind the dishes together, arrange the dishes into a Mickey shape, and connect with tiny pieces of leftover clay. Return to the oven for a few minutes to harden the clay.
