Aladdin’s makeup designer Milagros Medina-Cerdeira turned to the glamour of Hollywood to inspire some of the character looks in the show, including the iconic character of Jasmine. She found inspiration in the 1940s film ‘The Thief of Baghdad’, fusing Middle Eastern motifs with a modern glamour look. It was essential that Jasmine’s makeup looked beautiful and soft, but with an underlying strength and defiance.
How do you bring the larger-than-life, show-stopping role of Genie to life on stage? That was one of the challenges faced by the creative team when designing Aladdin. Milagros once again looked to Hollywood for inspiration, adding plenty of glitter and shading to reflect the famous Cave of Wonders and his home inside the legendary lamp. Genie needed an other-worldly feel but also a look that reflected the many magical guises and personalities of this hilarious and beloved character.
